Horfeish Women’s Centre
for Traditional Arts & Crafts

Horfeish is one of the oldest Druze Galilean villages nestled high in the hills of Upper Galilee. The village is home to both a Druze and a Christian community living respectfully side by side. Horfeish Women’s Centre meets in a 250-year-old refurbished house in the oldest street of the village. This section of the village has recently undergone extensive regeneration as part of an Israeli government initiative to restore the traditional centers and way of life in the villages of the Galilee.

Horfeish Women’s Centre is an initiative set up by local Druze women to provide a working framework for the religious women of their community who traditionally do not work outside of their home. As young girls the women learnt the skills of local arts and handicrafts from their mothers and grandmothers who pass the Druze traditions from one generation to the next. Exquisite embroidery, lacemaking, and crotchet is included. The Centre provides an amazing opportunity for its members. It enables the women to contribute to their household economy whilst maintaining in today’s modern world the arts and handicrafts rooted in their traditional heritage. The women range from 35 – 70 years of age with approximately sixty registered members. By meeting and working together the women provide companionship and a means to raise funds, earn an income and explain their lifestyle to the outside world.

We are delighted to include with your Secret Galilee Gallery gift parcel a beautiful hand-made original crotched tablemat. The design is a traditional Druze pattern passed on from each generation.
